Journaling as Resistance: A Practice of Becoming

A SOMA SOMA collaboration with Journaling as resistance

“What are we choosing into? To move beyond what we are comfortable with and what it is we know. To stretch into what we don’t yet know to evolve and become the humans this time and this earth requires of us.” -Norma Kawelokū Wong

Inspired by Norma Wong’s "Who We Are Becoming Matters", this workshop offers a space to rest, breathe, remember, and journal. Through somatics-based practices, we’ll share in collective readings and engage with embodied reflection. This is an invitation to ask ourselves and each other, "Who are we being?" and "Who are we becoming?"

This trauma-informed workshop is facilitated by Amélie Gaulier and Emily Thulier. We suggest a sliding scale contribution of $10-$40, pay via Venmo @Amelie-Gaulier. All proceeds go to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund (PCRF). If finances are a concern, or if you prefer offering alternative currency, please email somasomanewyork@gmail.com

These workshops build on a previous collaboration with activist Em Taliana, who coined the term Journaling as Resistance. The practice has since evolved through single and co-facilitations with Mylage Negga, Sy Lammer and Emily Thulier. It began at STORM, a SWANA bookstore founded by Nour Sabbagh in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. After STORM’s physical location closed in June 2025, the series continued at Sunview Luncheonette, hosted by Sy Lammer. It has found a new home at Held Space, a collective fostering creativity, community, and care in Greenpoint.
